WE REGRET TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF Captain Leonard H. Swanton - retired.
Waltham - Retired Waltham Fire Department Captain Leonard H. Swanton, of Waltham, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at his home. He was 77.
Len was born in Waltham on June 12, 1932, a son of the late Leonard J. and Doris (Hills) Swanton, and had been a lifelong resident. Lenny's wife of 47 years, Louise A. (McHugh) Swanton died June 28, 2004.
After graduating from Waltham High School Len joined the United States Navy where he served aboard the U.S.S. Stoddard, a 'Fletcher class' destroyer during the Korean War. Len was appointed a firefighter with the Waltham Fire Department on October 18, 1959. He was promoted to Lieutenant on July, 9 1978 and to Captain on March 26, 1983, a position he held until his retirement ten years later. He served most of his career at 'Central Station' on Lexington Street as the captain aboard Ladder 1.
Len also worked for many years as a truck driver for Harvey Industries in Waltham and was hired as the company's first employee. He and his family spent many happy days at their summer home in Harwich where Len enjoyed sailing his Sunfish on Long Pond. He was also a longtime participant with the Cape Cod Old Timer's Softball League. Len also enjoyed cycling along the Cape Cod Rail Trail, walking, fishing and reading.
He leaves his children, Patti Caira and her husband, Edward, Joyce A. Pilicy and her husband, Paul, all of Waltham, Janet M. I'Aboni and her husband, James, of South Portland, Maine, Beverly J. Goodwin and her husband, Daniel, of Waltham, Carole A. Knox and her husband, Greg, of Framingham, Leonard E. Swanton of Andover, Waltham Firefighter William G. Swanton of Acton, James T. Swanton and his wife, Jennifer, and John J. Swanton, all of Framingham. Len was also the loving Grampy of Taryn, Rebecca, Jason, Kelly, Lisa, Erin, Melissa, Paul, Luke, Daniel, Emily, Monica, Joseph, Abigail, Thomas, Kathleen, Allison and Samantha and great-Grampy of Mathew and Nolan. He also leaves his devoted caregiver, Mary Mensah of Worcester and many nieces and nephews.
Len was the brother of the late Jean Mangan.
Family and friends will honor and remember Len's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning in Christ Church, 750 Main Street, Waltham when his funeral service will be celebrated. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.

The arrangements are as follows:
The wake will be Friday January 1st from 3 to 8pm at the Joyce Funeral Home 245 Main Street.
The Funeral will be Saturday 10:00am at saint Mary's Church.
Any member available to assist at the Wake is asked to contact Steve Lydon for an assigned time, at the Moody Street station on Wednesday afternoon.
Logistics for the funeral will be posted wednesday and distributed at the Wake.

Waltham Waltham Firefighter Robert J. Bergeron, of Waltham, died Monday, December 28, 2009 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 48.
Bob was born in Waltham on August 29, 1961, a son of Mary C. (Law) (Bergeron) Pelletier of Highland Beach, Florida and the late Paul J. Bergeron, Sr., and had been a lifelong resident. He was a 1979 graduate of Waltham High School.
He was appointed a firefighter on February 1, 1987 and was assigned to the Central Station on Lexington Street before moving to Engine 7, Lake Street Station, thirteen years ago. Bob was a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local No. 866 and had served on the executive board and negotiating committee.
Besides his love for the job, Bobbys other passion in life was hockey, a sport that he played all of his life. As a longtime coach with the Waltham Youth Hockey League he found great enjoyment teaching and nurturing his son, Jeffrey, now a sophomore and member of the J.V. team at Waltham High School, the skills of the game. He was also a longtime coach with the North Waltham Baseball League and the Little Nippers Baseball League.
He and his beloved wife, Wendy S. (Julien) Bergeron celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary this past October. In addition to his wife, son and mother, Bobby leaves his brothers and sisters, Waltham Firefighter Paul J. Bergeron, Jr., of Millis, Janet Robertson of Waltham, Linda Silva of Ormond Beach, Florida, David Bergeron of Maynard, Carol Haley of Billerica and Mary Bergeron of Waltham; his mother and father-in-law, Bonnie and Jim Julien of Swampscott and many nieces and nephews.

WE REGRET TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF Lt. Malcolm R. Mac Hayes - retired.

Waltham Mr. Malcolm R. Mac Hayes, a 32 year veteran of the Waltham Fire Department, died Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at his home. He was 85.
Mac was born in Waltham on May 25, 1924, a son of the late William and Emma (OLeary) Hayes and had been a lifelong resident. He was a graduate of Waltham High School. While in school Mac took flying lessons and during World War II he served with the United States Army Air Corps. He was trained as a bombardier and flying instructor and trained Chinese pilots at Maxwell Field in Alabama to fly and to fight in the China-Burma-India Theater.
After the war Mac returned home to Waltham and worked at the Waltham Foundry Company. In 1947 he met his future bride, Marie A. (Leas) Hayes, a Lawrence native and a nurse at the Brighton Marine Hospital, at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom. Mac and Marie were married a year later and settled in Waltham where they spent more than sixty happy years working hard and raising their eight children.
On February 7, 1954 Mac was appointed a firefighter with the Waltham Fire Department. Tragically, three days later on February 10th, Mac and Maries fourth child, their five day old daughter Maryellen died at Waltham Hospital of a respiratory ailment. In April of 1963 Mac was promoted to Fire Lieutenant, a position that he held until his retirement from the department on January 10, 1986. After that Mac worked for several years as a funeral assistant for his nephew, Bill Hayes, at the former Lyons and Hayes Funeral Home in West Newton.
He was a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local No. 866 and had been a member of the Knights of Columbus in Waltham.
In addition to his wife, Mac leaves his children, Malcolm R. Mac Hayes, Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Weston, Barry C. Hayes of Waltham, Marie A. Marquis and her husband, Greg, of Bow, New Hampshire, Judith M. Cary of Pittsfield, Christopher M. Hayes and his wife, Jana, of Burlington, Iowa, Patricia M. Luckern and her husband, Mo, of New Durham, New Hampshire, Eileen M. Bates and her husband, Ray, of Marblehead and Jonathan W. Hayes and his wife, Pam, of West Burlington, Iowa; his sister, Mary Langton of Pocasset; 19 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Mac was also a brother of the late William, Archibald, Rev. C. Edmund, Paul and John Hayes, Eleanor Kelly and Ann Bourque.

WE REGRET TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF Deputy Robert J. Maher - retired.

Waltham- Retired Duputy Fire Chief Robert J. Maher of Waltham died Friday November 20, 2009 at Maristhill Nursing Home in Waltham. He was 75.
Bob was born in Waltham on April 12, 1934. A son of the late William and Ida (Fewer) Maher, he was a lifelong resident of Waltham, a 1953 graduate of Waltham High School, and he furthered his education at Massachusetts Bay Community College receiving a degree in Fire Science.
Bob was a Sargeant in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and received the National Defense Service Medal as well as the Good Conduct Medal.
Bob was appointed to the Waltham Fire Department on July 4, 1965, promoted to Lieutenant on December 28, 1975, and then was promoted to Captain on August 31, 1985. On May 31, 1992, Bob was promoted to Deputy Fire Chief, a position he held until his retirement on December 25, 1992, after twenty seven years of dedicated service to the Waltham Fire Department and the City of Waltham.
He was a member of the Waltham Firefighters Union, Local # 866, the Waltham Firefighters Welfare and Relief Association, the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post # 156, and the Marine Corps League Detachment # 594. Following his retirement he enjoyed golfing, walking, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Bob was the husband of the late Mary E. (Rivers) Maher; he leaves his children, Retired Waltham Police Detective Robert J. Maher of Acton; Cynthia L. Martin of Waltham; Susan E. Doherty of Natick; and Waltham Police Sergeant Timothy J. Maher and his wife, Kerry, of Waltham; two sisters, Mary Auld and Teresa Smith both of Waltham; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was the brother of the late William Maher, Catherine Landry and was the father-in-law of the late Michael Martin

WE REGRET TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF Lt. Stephen C. Kolodzieski - retired.

West Newton- Retired Waltham Fire Lieutenant Stephen C. Kolodzieski, of West Newton, died Tuesday November 17, 2009 at his home. He was 87.
Lieutenant Kolodzieski was born in Waltham on August 17, 1922, a son of the late Stefan and Teodozia (Brombakovska) Kolodzieski. He was a 1941 graduate of Waltham High School and furthered his education at Mass Bay Community College.
Stevie was a corporal in the United States Army during World War II serving in the 3702nd Quartermaster Truck Company. He participated in battles in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, as well as Central Europe.
Stevie was appointed to the Waltham Fire Department on February 4, 1947. He was promoted to Fire Lieutenant on May 25, 1969, a position that he held for twenty-two years. Stevie retired on January 2, 1987 after forty years of dedicated service to the Fire Department and the City of Waltham.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 2152 , the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post No. 156, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 953, as well as the Loyal Order of the Moose all of Waltham.
Stevie is survived by his sisters, Martha C. Kolodzieski of West Newton and Irene E. Lavallee of Cumberland, RI; his nieces and nephews, Denise Lavallee and her husband, Lawrence Lifshitz, of Worcester, David Lavallee and his wife, Pamela, of Wakefield, RI, Sharon Magliozzi and her husband, Richard, of Attleboro, Peter Lavallee, and his wife, Donna, of Pawtucket, RI, Jeannine Marsh and Stephen Lavallee, and his wife, Darie, all of Narragansett, RI, Paul Lavallee and his wife, Ellen, of Connecticut, Mary Louise Leary and her husband, John, of Natick, and Joanne Guild of West Newton, twenty-two grand nieces and nephews, and seven great grand nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Mary C. Muskalski and Joseph Kolodzieski.

MILLBURY Colleen M. Richer, 47, died Wednesday, Oct. 28th at UMASS Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, after being stricken ill at home.
She leaves her husband, Steven P. Richer; three sons, Devin P. Richer, Cameron J. Richer and Aidan P. Richer all of Millbury; her parents, John and Helen (Mitchell) Lennon of Waltham; three brothers, Shawn P. Lennon of Ft. Lauderdale, FL., Keiran F. Lennon and his wife Kim of Dracut and Martin E. Lennon of Waltham; a sister, Maura J. Lennon of Roslindale; her father-in-law, Roger R. Richer of Auburn; her uncle, Leo J. Skonicki of Auburn; her aunt, Nancy Lennon of Brighton; nephews and nieces. She was born in Brighton and is predeceased by a brother, Lawrence Lennon.
Colleen graduated from Becker College in 1982 and was a certified occupational therapy assistant, prior to her marriage. She was always known for her bright smile and vivacious and distinctive laughter. She volunteered at the Millbury Schools and at the local hospitals and taught CCD at St. Brigid Church for many years. Colleen devoted her life to her sons.
Her funeral will be held Monday, Nov. 2nd from the Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. in Millbury, with a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Brigid Church, 59 Main St. in Millbury. Burial will be in Central Cemetery in Millbury. Calling hours are 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1st in the funeral home. Waltham Miss June M. Garrigan, died Sunday, October 25, 2009 at The Blaire House in Worcester. She was 83. June was born in Waltham on July 28, 1926, a daughter of the late John R. and Maud (Barker) Garrigan, and had been a lifelong resident. Until her retirement in 1988, she worked for twenty-four years as the executive secretary in the chiefs office for the Waltham Fire Department. Before that, June worked for sixteen years at the Waltham City Clerks office. In her spare time, June was an avid golfer and was a former member of the Marlborough Country Club, Leo J. Martin Ladies League, and a former member of the Waltham Senior Citizens Bowling League. She leaves her brothers, Bernard B. Garrigan and his wife, Joan, of Camden, Maine and John R. Garrigan and his wife, Phyllis, of Duxbury, and her beloved nieces and nephews. June was also the sister of the late Paul M. Garrigan, Bernadine G. Roberts and Patricia A. Fitzpatrick. Ryan, Hope M.(Berkeley) a lifelong Cambridge resident. Died on Oct. 14, 2009 at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. She was 85 years old. Born and raised in Cambridge. She worked as a stenographer for the Bank of Boston. Lifelong parishioner of St. John's Church and member of the St. John's Church Guild. Beloved wife of the late Martin Ryan. Loving mother of Kathleen O'Malley of Burlington, Martin Ryan III of CT, Stephen Ryan of Weston, William Ryan of Reading, and the late Hope Ryan. Sister of Ruth McCormack of Belmont. We regret to announce the death of Captain Anthony "Tony" Cincotta, Retired
Of Hollywood, Florida, formerly of Waltham, died Thursday, June 4, 2008, at the Hospice by the Sea in Hollywood after a brief illness. He was 86.
The son of the late Philip and Mary (Mirabito) Cincotta, he was born in New Hampshire. Mr. Cincotta was raised and educated in Waltham and had life long resident before retiring to Florida 25 years ago.
Mr. Cincotta was appointed a Firefighter for the City of Waltham on May 24, 1953 and attained the rank of Lieutenant in 1960; he was promoted to Captain on July 3, 1965 and retired from the Department in 1978. During his service to the City he had been assigned to the Moody Street Fire Station with Engine One, Fire Department Headquarters on Lexington Street and the Lake Street Fire Station.
A veteran of WW II, Mr. Cincotta served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Army Air Corps.
He was a member of the Waltham Lodge of the Sons of Italy. Mr. Cincotta enjoyed reading and playing golf.
Mr. Cincotta is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret M. (McDonough) Cincotta, his daughters, Deborah Pelletier of FL, Christine Crooks of TX, his sons, Michael Cincotta of Weymouth and Mark Cincotta of FL, her grandchildren, Julie, Greg, Isabelle and Michelle and his great grandchildren, Connor and Katelyn.
He was predeceased by his sister, Josephine Cincotta and his brothers, Philip and Stephen Cincotta.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. from the Brasco and Sons Memorial, 773 Moody Street, Waltham, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Saint Marys Church at 10 a.m. Interment with Military and Fire Department Honors will follow at the Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham. We regret to announce the death of Chief Edward Cloonan, Retired

Edward A. Cloonan, Jr. WALTHAM Retired Waltham Fire Chief Edward A. Cloonan, Jr., of Waltham, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at his home. He was 90. Chief Cloonan was born in Waltham on March 31, 1919, a son of the late Edward J. and Mary M. (Mannion) Cloonan, and had been a lifelong resident. He was a 1936 graduate of Saint Marys High School in Waltham. In July, 1941 he joined the Waltham Fire Department as a callman firefighter, a position he held before joining the United States Army during World War II. Ed was a staff sergeant with the 275 Infantry Regiment of the 70th Infantry Division, nicknamed the Trailblazers. His unit entered France through Marseilles in 1944 and was in constant action until V-E Day in May, 1945. He participated in battles in the Rhineland and in Central Europe, most notably the Battle of the Bulge during the winter of 1944-45. As part of a heavy weapons company he was awarded a Bronze Star medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters for heroic achievement in action on January 3rd and on February 21st and 22nd when his company and battalion command posts came under heavy enemy fire near Philippsbourg, France and Saarbrucken, Germany. In January of 1945 he escaped a mortal wound when an enemy bullet was stopped by a Catholic daily missal the he kept and read daily. After the war Ed rejoined the Waltham Fire Department as a Fire Fighter. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1948, to Captain in 1951 and was promoted to Deputy Fire Chief in 1954. In December, 1964 he was appointed Chief of the department, a position that he held until his retirement twenty years later on March 31, 1984. He was one of the founding members of the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy and had been a member and past president of the Masschusetts Fire Chiefs Association. He was also a life member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the New England Association of Fire Chiefs. Ed also belonged to the Central Massachusetts Fire Chiefs Association and the Middlesex Forest Wardens Association. The chief was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 2152 in Waltham, the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post No. 156 where he was also a member of its band, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 953, all of Waltham and the 70th Infantry Division Association. Ed was also a member and past president of the Waltham Municipal Employees Credit Union and a member and past president of the Waltham Kiwanis Club. Ed leaves his wife of 61 years, Patricia A. (Sullivan) Cloonan; his children, Jane P. Bates and her husband, John, of Great Diamond Island, Maine, John E. Jack Cloonan and his wife, Linda, of West Caldwell, New Jersey, Edward T. Ned Cloonan and his wife, Linda, of Greenwich, Connecticut, Richard J. Cloonan and his wife, Bibiana of Manassas, Virginia and Elizabeth M. Betsy Henderson and her husband, Paul, of Chelmsford; his grandchildren, John, Katie and Terry Bates, Jacey, Olivia and Sara Cloonan and Matthew, Meghan and Molly Henderson; his great-grandchildren, Campbell, Declan and Devan and many nieces, nephews and cousins including Elizabeth ONeil of Waltham. Son of Firefighter Ken Garber - Group 3
Christopher John Garber, Of Quincy passed away on Monday, January 26, 2009 at age 20. Born in Quincy where he was raised and educated, he played football, softball, basketball and played hockey in the Quincy Youth Hockey League and at North Quincy High School. CJ attended Lasell College in Newton and was currently a student at the EMS Academy in Quincy with hopes of joining his father as a firefighter.
CJ is the beloved son of Marcia A. (Burgess) and Kenneth M. Garber, WFD of Quincy and the beloved brother of Sarah Garber of Newmarket, NH. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as his special friend Aisling Curran.
Visiting hours will be held at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center on Thursday, January 29 from 4:00 to 8:00pm. A Celebration of CJ's Life will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday at 10:30 am. Family and friends are invited. Burial will follow at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.

WE REGRET TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF Firefighter William E. McDonald- retired.
Mr. William E. McDonald, of Waltham and Hillsboro, Florida, died Sunday, January 4, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. He was 78.
Born in Newton on October 13, 1930, a son of the late Edward and Anne (Dowling) McDonald, Bill had lived most of his life in Waltham. During the Korean War he served with the United States Navy.
After leaving the service, Bill returned to Waltham to marry his beloved Nancy M. Horne, his wife of 54 years. As Bill and Nancy started their life together, he became proprietor of the fourth generation of McDonald Plastering Company of Waltham. In addition to his responsibilities and commitment to his commercial and residential clients, Bill was a firefighter for over 21 years with the Waltham Fire Department, retiring in 1984.
Bill was a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 953 in Waltham and a forty year member of the American Legion, most recently at Post No. 162 in Deerfield Beach, Florida. He also belonged to the PFC John M. Sullivan, USMC Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10334 in Waltham and Local No. 866 of the International Association of Fire Fighters. He and his family were also longtime members of Trinity Church (formerly First Congregational Church) on Main Street in Waltham.
Bill was never one to seek personal recognition but over the many years of both providing dependable quality and professional service for his plastering clients, and public service related to the Waltham Fire Department, his reputation of character, honesty and service to others became very well known in the local community.
In addition to his wife Nancy, Bill is survived by his son, Jeffrey McDonald and his wife, Kelley, of Waltham; two daughters, Cindy McDonald of Riverbrook Residence in Stockbridge and Julie Timmerman and her husband, Phil, of Matthews, North Carolina; his grandchildren, Derik & Matthew Timmerman and Kaitlyn, Justin, Molly and Connor McDonald and his great-grandchildren, Matthew and Nathaniel Timmerman. Other family members include Sandy (Horne) Hatch and her husband, Bob, of Hudson, his sister, Barbara (McDonald) King and her husband, John, of North Carolina and many nieces and nephews.
He was also a brother of the late James and Richard McDonald.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Bill's funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday in Trinity Church, 730 Main Street, Waltham. Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 2- 4 and 7-9 p.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham.

WE REGRET TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF Lt. Richard Roche- retired.
Natick - Mr. Richard P. Roche, of Natick, formerly of Waltham, died Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at the Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick. He was 73.
Born in Waltham, a son of the late Peter and Elizabeth (LeFort) Roche, Richard was appointed to the Waltham Fire Department on July 4, 1965. He was promoted to Fire Lieutenant on December 1, 1974 and he retired on April 26, 1996 after thirty-one years of dedicated service to the Fire Department and to the City of Waltham.
Richard was a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local No. 866, a longtime member of the Wayland Country Club and an avid golfer. He was a member of the Board of Directors at the Hurley House in Waltham for many years.
Richard was well known to many for always lending a helping hand and was a very caring gentleman. He was very proud to be a Blind Senior National Golf Coach for the United States Blind Golfers Association 62nd National Championship in 2007, where he coached his good friend, Joe Lazaro. Richard was a Korean War veteran serving with the United States Marine Corp.
He leaves his devoted wife of fifty-two years, Jean A. (Hapenney) Roche; his loving children, Pamela M. Dearborn of Framingham, Cynthia J. St. Hilaire of Kingston Springs, Tennessee, Richard P. Roche, Jr. of Acton, Loreen A. Coraccio and Jeananne Roche-Mahoney both of Natick; three sisters, Emilie Dion of West Palm Beach, Florida, Rita Doyle of Hudson, New Hampshire, and Claudette Coto of Lowell.
Richard was also the proud grandfather of twelve grandchildren, one great-grandchild and he also leaves many nieces and nephews.
He was also a brother of the late Edgar Roche and Elizabeth 'Betty' Wilson.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral at 9 a.m. Saturday from The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.20), Waltham followed by a Funeral Mass in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of Saint Charles Borromeo Church, 51 Hall Street, Waltham at 10 a.m. Burial will be private.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m.

Phillip Ballo
WALTHAM Deputy Chief Phillip Ballo, Waltham Fire Department (Retired) of Waltham, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at Newton- Wellesley Hospital after a brief illness. Born, raised and educated in Waltham, he was a lifelong resident. After a distinguished career, Mr. Ballo retired as a deputy chief from the city of Waltham Fire Department, working out of the Moody Street station. A World War II veteran, Mr. Ballo served with the Army in the European Theatre. He was a member of the Sullivan Post V.F.W. in Waltham. A devoted father and husband, through hard work and sacrifice he was able to develop the Ballo Family Trust of realty holdings. Mr. Ballo is survived by his wife of 62 years, Louise E. (Cinelli) Ballo; his daughter, Elaine and her husband, Allan Mogan, of Waltham; his son, Phillip A. Ballo of Waltham; his sisters, Sally and her husband, Vinnie Morreale, of Waltham, and Josephine Papia; and his sisters-in-law, Rose Ballo of Waltham and Susan Cinelli of Newton. He is also survived by his six grandchildren; his great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Stephen Ballo, and his sister, Phyllis and her husband, Bruno Faccine. Funeral services will take place Wednesday, Dec. 24, at 8 a.m., from the Brasco and Sons Memorial, 773 Moody St., Waltham, with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church at 9 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Waltham. Robert E. Hoffses, 89, died on Dec. 13 at Cape Cod Hospital. He was the husband of Eleanor L. (Betts) Hoffses.
Born and raised in Waltham, he served just short of three years with the U.S. Navy during WW II from 1942 1944. He worked as a Firefighter for the City of Waltham for 27 years and retired as a Lieutenant in 1973 to his beloved Cape Cod. He was a member of the Boston Firefighters, Tapper Club and the American Legion.
In addition to his wife he leaves a daughter, Roberta M. McGaffigan and her husband Cornelius of Holliston, MA.; a son, David I. Hoffses of Georgetown, MA.; Granddaughters, Stacie L. Hoffses of Georgetown, MA., Sarah E. Logan and her husband Chris of Townsend, MA., Kelly and her husband Dan Higgins of Holliston, MA., and Kim and her husband Jay Marsden, Jr. of Holliston, MA.; and a grandson, Brian and his wife Bonnie McGaffigan of Franklin, MA. He is Papa to five great grandfather with another soon to be born. He also leaves one sister, Anne Nisbet and was brother of the late Jane MacDonald and Richard Hoffses.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday December 17 , beginning at 10am at the Morris & OConnor Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Dr., So. Yarmouth and concluding with a service at 11:30am . Burial will be at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA at 3pm.

Charles F. Ryberg
PLYMOUTH Retired Waltham Deputy Fire Chief Charles F. Ryberg, of Plymouth, formerly of Waltham, died Wednesday, Dec.10, 2008, at his home. He was 84. Born in Waltham, a son of the late John and Mabel (Smith) Ryberg, Charlie was appointed to the Waltham Fire Department Feb. 4, 1947. He was promoted to fire lieutenant June 21, 1953, promoted to captain March 9, 1963, and became deputy fire chief May 7, 1972. He retired Sept. 25, 1981, after 34 years of dedicated service to the fire department and to the City of Waltham. Charlie served with the United States Navy during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Lexington CV-16. The Lexington joined the fifth fleet at Pearl Harbor after it was commissioned in February,1943. During the war, the carrier participated in nearly every major operation in the Pacific Theater and spent a total of 21 months in combat. Her planes destroyed 372 enemy aircraft in the air and 475 more on the ground. She sank or destroyed 300,000 tons of enemy cargo and damaged an additional 600,000 tons. The ship's guns shot down 15 planes and assisted in downing five more. The Japanese reported Lexington sunk no less than four times! Yet, each time she returned to fight again, leading the propagandist Tokyo Rose to nickname her "The Blue Ghost." The name is a tribute to the ship and the crew and air groups that served aboard her. After the war, Charlie helped to co-found the U.S.S. Lexington CV-16 Blue Ghost Association. After retiring from the fire department, Charlie drove for the Waltham Bus company for 17 years. He was a former coach of the New York Giants of Walthams Little Nippers League, and he also coached for the Northgate Colts and Main Street Auto of the Stan Musial/Inter-City League. During high school, he played on the Waltham High School championship hockey team in 1941 and 1942. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, golfing, and woodworking, especially creating his "birds." Charlie enjoyed all Boston sports teams and was a Boston Patriots season ticket holder for many years. He was also very involved in local and national politics. Always an active man, he became at the age of 79 one of the oldest recipients of a kidney transplant. Charlie was a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local No. 866; the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 953; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2152; the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post No. 156; the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 147, all of Waltham, and the Gov. David I. Walsh Assembly, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He leaves his wife of 62 years, Marie E. "Jan" (Roach) Ryberg; his children, Mark J. Ryberg and his wife, Debbie, of Stuart, Fla., Glenn D. Ryberg and his wife, Val, of Marlboroygh, Donna M. Lexander and her husband, Jimmy, and Patty Marqus and her husband, Rocky, all of Waltham; his grandchildren, Jennifer and Sandra Englehart, Courtney, Scott, Shawn, Lillian, and Charlie Ryberg; his great-grandchildren, Zoey and Rayna Butler and John Englehart; and many nieces and nephews. Charlie was the father of the late Allen Ryberg and brother of the late Paul Ryberg, John Ryberg and Ann Waugh.
